For the last 30 years Lions clubs around the world have proudly sponsored the Lions International Peace Poster Contest in local schools and youth groups. This worldwide art contest encourages young people ages 11-13 to express their visions of peace.
The Goodhue Lions’ Club sponsors the contest locally and picks a winner from both the Goodhue Public School and St. John’s Lutheran School. This year’s winners were: public school - Brooke Betcher, 13-year-old daughter of Josh and Sarah Betcher, and from St. John’s - William Ryan, 13-year-old son of Trevor and Karla Ryan.
Brooke, William and Goodhue Lion’s representatives attended the District 5M1 contest on Sunday, December 8, 2024 in Stewartville, MN. The district consists of more than 1700 members of 52 clubs in eight counties in the Southeastern corner of Minnesota. Brooke and William each had their picture taken with District Governor, Lion Bill Kase.
Judges were asked to evaluate posters on three criteria: originality, artistic merit and expression of the theme, "Peace Without Limits." William placed third in the district competition but only the first place winner will advance to the next level. Worldwide about 350,000 students submit entries. One grand prize winner receives $5,000.00 and $500.00 is given to each of 23 merit award winners.
